âSoâkayo na uli?â
Kalila shot Lenlen a look. Datu was approachingâfrowny face and allâand she was worried heâd think they were gossiping about him.
They were not. Like always, Lenlen thought it amusing to put her on the spot when she least expected it. But the question on her friendâs lips was one she had decided to bury under other pressing matters, because determining the status of their relationship was not of urgent concern. Besides, wasnât she too old to care about labels?
A question for later, because now, Datu stood beside Kalila, holding his camera in front of them. âTake a look at this,â he said, and played back footage of Bahay Munti students he filmed a few minutes ago. Fully aware of his warm chest pressed against her shoulder, she trained her eyes on the video and tried not to get distracted.
A futile attempt, really, because did he change his cologne, or was that aftershave? He definitely wore a different scent today, and thankfully, she didnât hate it. There was no telling which completely harmless smell could trigger her nausea these days, and it would be a bummer if she had to tell Datu to be at least five hundred meters away from her when in fact she could not get enough of him.
âWhat do you think?â
âI like it!â Lenlen clapped her hands close to her lips. âIâm loving the vibrant colors on this camera. And itâs so nice to see those smiling, happy facesâ¦right, Kali?â
Despite its impending shutdown, Bahay Munti reopened its gates and classrooms to their students this week. Miss Magda and the rest of the teaching staff spoke to the childrenâs parents to inform them of the situation, assuring them steps are being made to find a new place for the kids but promising nothing concrete as of yet.
Hope bloomed in her chest though, because Yves had promised to take her to the property he found and said heâll back her up on procuring it.
And now, here was Datu with his crew, filming footage for the video they planned to put up on the website. The four of them divvied up tasks between pairs: Belle and EJ were downstairs with the four- to-six year olds, and Datu and Vito were here at the second floor, documenting Miss Bernaâs class with the seven- to-nine year olds.
âIt looks great, Datu,â she said, smiling. âBy the way, can Miss Berna resume her class now?â
âYes, yes. Of course.â
Kalila waved at Berna, who was distributing sheets of Oslo paper to the kids. âWeâll go now, Miss Berna. Thank you so much.â
Berna simply nodded, and they were off.
âWhat else do you need?â Kalila asked, walking arm in arm with Lenlen, whom she noticed was making eyes at Vito.
Datu stopped in his tracks, shot a glance at the overcast sky, and tinkered with his camera settings. âIâll need a video of the façade,â he mumbled.
âAll right. Need me to come with you?â
âNah, I can manage.â He looked up at Vito. âYou brought the drone, right?â
âYes, rekdi.
